Perils of Progress
Is it worth progressing with all the perils?
No, I'm not referring to any environmental issue here. It is our personal career progress that creates a peril. As you switch organisations to climb up on the professional ladder (or the Government ladder as is for me), it often happens that you have to leave your own cave or den or whatever you feel about your home town. Along with that you lose all the familiar sights, sounds, smiles, roads(including pot holes), people, food and last but not the least your family and friends.
If the place is nearby you could at least visit your place often, if it is Chennai to Ahmedabad like me, It is going to be next to impossible to visit often.
I have been to places outside my home town but only places that are nearby or with a definite return plan. The uncertainty of return to Chennai is looming large in my face. It is difficult to resign yourselves to the fact that you are not going to be around to witness the usual things that happen in the neighborhood.
I miss Chennai, its heat and dust, it's crowded buses and trains where one gets to hear the choicest expletives at the drop of a hat and most of it I miss my family. Though my wife will be joining me shortly, I'm afraid that my parents will not be comfortable in the third floor (top floor) 2 BHK quarters now provided to me. Hope I might be able to change it to something more comfortable for them.
Now I realize the difficulties faced by scores of my friends who have moved to different cities in India and abroad in search of professional growth.
Now that brings me to my question: is it worth?
In my present mind frame I might say it is not worth, but on a calmer reflection, if these few years are going to be a stepping stone for a better career, it would be better to go for it isn't it?
